Lincoln's Pittsburgh Address

Soldiers & Sailors is pleased to be the first museum to display the historic furnishings from the Monongahela House at the time of Abraham Lincoln's visit.

In 1935 the grand old Monongahela House was torn down to make way for a new more modern
structure. In an effort to preserve at least a part of endangered Pittsburgh history, the furnishings
from the Lincoln Room were given to the County of Allegheny for safe keeping.
The selection of furnishings displayed at Soldiers and Sailors Military Museum are physical
reminders of Abraham Lincoln's visit in February 1861. By looking at the celebrated
assembled pieces, we gain a window into the past history of not only Pittsburgh, but of
Civil War era America as well.
