Memorial Day CelebrationMonday, May 31, 2010 - 10 am - 4 pmWHAT: Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Day Celebration WHY: Soldiers & Sailors will be holding its annual Memorial Day Celebration on Monday, May 31, 2010 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. This event sponsored by National Physique Committee, USA, is free to the public and is aimed at remembering the men and women who proudly serve or have served in our country's armed forces. Included during the event are free admission into the museum, live entertainment, children's activities, veteran remembrance activities and two special programs. The first program will be at 10:30 am in the auditorium. This program is a War on Terrorism Memorial Ceremony to remember Pennsylvania's military servicemen and servicewomen who made the ultimate sacrifice and those still defending freedom. The ceremony will consist of prayer service and a slide show of names and images of the Pennsylvanian's killed in the War on Terrorism. During the ceremony the Char Val Singers will perform the National Anthem and accompany the slide show with Amazing Grace. The second program is the Patrioteer Challenge being held at 1:00 pm. The challenge is opened to all, ages 13 and older. Winner will be selected based on 3 key elements; patriotic attire, drill exercise and their answer to a patriotic question. The winner will be named Miss or Mr. Soldiers & Sailors, receive a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond and asked to ride with Soldiers & Sailors in the Veteran's Day Parade in Downtown Pittsburgh. The Veteran Remembrance Activities will include a photo collage of local military and a video area where attendees will be encouraged to record their military story or a message to the troops serving today. For the photo collage we are asking the public to send in pictures of their loved ones, or themselves, in uniform to be added to the collage. These images along with name of military person and era of service, can be mailed to the museum, 4141 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213 or sent digitally via email casey@soldiersandsailorshall.org or added to Soldiers & Sailors' Facebook page. Images can also be added to the collage during the Memorial Day Celebration. The person in the photo could have served in any branch of the military and during any time period, conflict or peace. The videos recorded during the event are being collected for future use in our education department, museum exhibits and Soldiers & Sailors' YouTube Channel. Live entertainment during the event will include a patriotic performance by the Char Val Singers, the debut of Soldiers & Sailors United States Colored Troops Youth Re-enactment Drum Corps and music by Flavor. Children Activities will include a firehouse jump around, a scavenger hunt through the museum, sand art key chains and a patriotic photo area.
