Planning Begins for Centennial Celebration of Historical Museum in PittsburghNovember 2009
Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum Holds Kick-Off Planning Reception for 100th Anniversary in 2010 Pittsburgh, PA (October 2009) - The historic museum sits atop the hill off Fifth Avenue in Oakland, appearing almost as if it presides over the surrounding campus and hospitals - younger-bodied buildings that have more recently joined the museum on the hillside. Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum has seen many years on that hill - in fact, it will be 100 years next October.
It is certainly a special occasion to celebrate a monument that has been a cornerstone in the city of Pittsburgh for a century, but it is even more important to celebrate the lives of the people who stand behind the purpose of that monument - those who have served for our country over the past 100 years.
To honor these individuals, the anniversary event, named the Cannonball Centennial Celebration, will be held on October 9, 2010. The chairperson for the event is Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato, who will be joined by other recognizable public figures in celebrating the Cannonball Centennial Celebration. The planning has already begun, as the Kick-Off Celebration was held on October 15th for the committee, which will be seeking out sponsorships for the event. The money collected through sponsorships, ticket sales, and other fundraising, will contribute to keeping the museum running for the next 100 years.
"Our mission to honor and serve the veterans can always use more support from the community, so we are reaching out to organizations and individuals who may have the means to contribute to the Memorial, particularly if they have a close connection with the military and understand the importance of historical education. There is so much history in Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum that it is important we do our best to keep it running and continue to improve our veteran and educational programs," John McCabe, Executive Vice President and COO of Soldiers & Sailors Museum, stated. "This event presents us with a good opportunity to really ramp up fundraising for our mission and the Memorial's continued improvement and survival."
Anyone interested in joining the Sponsorship Committee or becoming a sponsor for the Cannonball Centennial Celebration should contact Marjorie Henderson, Director of Sales at the museum, at 412-621-4253, ext. 207. Planning will continue throughout the next year and more information will become available in the upcoming months. A few smaller events involving local veterans are expected to take place throughout the year as well, building up to the Cannonball Centennial Celebration.
