Through the years soldiers have kept diaries for a variety of reasons. Writing in a diary often offered an outlet, a place which they could unload their fears and frustrations. Today, these diaries stand as significant primary documents that offer insight into the day-to-day activities of a soldier, as well as their personal thoughts and feelings. This program will highlight several diaries in our collection and the stories behind the individuals that used them to document their service.

*”Forgotten Soldiers Veterans of the Korean War”

A documentary film and exhibit by Michael Sahaida featuring local Veterans of the Korean War.

My life long interest in history, a fascination with bravery and chivalry – coupled with a chance

meeting with Korean War Veteran Don Allen, led to the creation of this project.

As the project grew, with each successive interview, I realized how many Veterans of the Korean

War we have here in Western Pennsylvania.

These soldiers, who grew up in the hardship of the Great Depression, and came of age in the

shadow of World War II, were called to duty in a foreign land thousands of miles away from their

homes in Pennsylvania. While they were there, the world back home not only went on without

them – it rapidly changed.

For each of these men, returning home to build a life postponed by war was extremely difficult.

And many people in their communities knew very little, if anything, about the Korean War.

Even today, many people do not understand that there was a brutal war in Korea that affected

the lives of millions of Americans.

We are better people when we understand more about the lives of those who make up our

community. We are better citizens when we understand and learn from our history. I hope this

film helps us to do that.

Throughout history soldiers have captured items from the enemy to take back home as souvenirs. Weapons, flags, uniforms, or other equipment become objects considered “trophies of war”. Join us to learn about artifacts from our collection that were acquired by American Soldiers in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
