Spotlight On: Gettysburg
July marks the 156th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum will commemorate the great battle with a special display of artifacts gathered from our stored archives.
Featured will be several pieces from a collection, begun in 1864, of battlefield recovered objects. The Danner Collection was one of Gettysburg’s earliest assemblages of artifacts displayed for visitors to the battlefield. Soldiers & Sailors has a large number of pieces with provenance to the Danner Collection and will feature selected examples for the month-long exhibit.
Another featured artifact is the canton from the regimental flag of the 102nd Pennsylvania Infantry. (The canton being the blue field of a flag and, in the case of Pennsylvania battle flags, was painted with the crest of the Commonwealth.) The 102nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry was positioned at the base of Little Round Top during the battle with this flag marking the position of the center of the regiment.
Copies of “Witness to History –Gettysburg-Tales the Artifacts Tell”, a book about our Gettysburg artifacts, will be on sale in the gift shop through the exhibition.
